Navigating the Challenges of New Zealand's Healthcare System

At Naked Finance, we’re always keeping an eye on the issues that impact the wellbeing of our clients and community. Recently, the NZ Initiatives Health Innovator Summit in Auckland brought some pressing concerns to light, highlighting the challenges our healthcare system is currently facing. One of the keynote speakers, Lester Levy, Commissioner of Health NZ Te Whatu Ora, offered some powerful insights into where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we’re headed.

We wanted to take the opportunity to share some of these insights with you. Here are some of the key points that were discussed:

The Growing GP Shortage

Many GP practices and the communities they serve are already feeling the strain due to a GP shortages. And if you think the situation is bad now, it is speculated that New Zealand will face a shortage of up to 1,000 fewer GPs by 2030. So is the lack of GPs the only cause for the increased strain? A reduction of GPs is one side of the story but there has also been a surge in GP visits since 2008. 2.2 million more GP visits per year to be precise. The combination of fewer GPs and more GP visits is leading to a growing problem. Alarmingly, 1 in 3 practices are no longer accepting new patients—a fourfold increase since 2019. This trend shows no sign of slowing down, making access to primary care increasingly difficult for many Kiwis.

An Aging Population

By 2028, it's projected that one in five New Zealanders will be 65 or older. This demographic shift will place additional demands on our healthcare system, as older adults generally require more frequent and complex medical care.

The Mental Health Crisis

Mental health is another critical area of concern. It’s estimated that one in four young adults in New Zealand is experiencing significant psychological distress. The need for accessible, effective mental health services has never been greater.

Rising Rates of Diabetes

Lifestyle factors are also taking a toll. Three in ten Kiwis have a BMI over 30, which significantly increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. Addressing these issues requires both individual and collective action.

Sobering statistics for Aotearoa's Healthcare System

These are sobering statistics and they will, sooner or later, hit close to home when you try to get an appointment at your GP and face a 2+ week wait. This is a familiar situation for many Kiwis seeking medical help so it is no wonder that virtual GP services are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional appointments.
